ACAM Benchbook Discusses Topics Relating to Special Masters

A partner and attorney at Gentle, Turner, Sexton & Harbison, LLC, in Alabama, Edgar “Ed” Gentle serves as a neutral settlement administrator and special master for the courts. Possessing more than three decades of legal experience, Ed Gentle also writes and speaks about topics relating to mass torts and serves as the president of the Academy of Court Appointed Masters (ACAM).

Special masters are attorneys who are appointed by a court to carry out specific actions on its behalf. In many situations, these professionals compile evidence and documents to inform the court’s actions; however, they can also administer compensation, advise judges about technical issues, and assist with criminal and class action cases.

The ACAM, the only national organization for special masters, focuses on educating the bench and bar on how to use such professionals. This is done in part through the ACAM Benchbook, a publication that provides lawyers and judges with information about using special masters.

Consisting of six sections, the book explains how special masters provide the civil justice system with inexpensive, just, and quick determinations for disputes. The first section focuses on types of appointments and provides professionals with a summary of the different roles filled by judicial adjuncts. Professionals then can read about the rules governing appointment orders in section two and look at sample appointment order forms. Section three covers ethical issues and practical concerns, section four discusses state and federal master rules and authorities, and sections five and six discuss federal and state cases involving masters.

The ACAM Benchbook is available for free to download on the organization’s website. Lawyers and judges are encouraged to print out the book and keep it in a binder for review.

John Green Novels That Have Been Adapted for Film

The recipient of a juris doctor from the University of Alabama, Edgar "Ed" Gentle leverages over 35 years of experience as an attorney in his role as partner with Gentle Turner Sexton and Harbison. When he isn't administering settlements within the courts, Ed Gentle enjoys reading John Green novels.

A New York Times bestselling author of uplifting, heartwarming, and inspiring stories, Green has written five novels with his sixth scheduled to be released in October 2017. Two of those novels have been adapted for film, while others remain in development. The first novel of Green's that was adapted for the big screen was The Fault in Our Stars, a 2014 film starring Shailene Woodley and Ansel Elgort as a pair of teenage cancer patients who seek out a reclusive author they admire in Amsterdam. In 2015, Green's novel Paper Towns was made into a film.

Green's first novel, Looking for Alaska, was published 10 years prior to the film release of Paper Towns and its film rights were subsequently purchased by Paramount. Yet, the project has been unable to move forward without a director and Paramount is unwilling to sell the rights back to Green. The film rights to his second novel, An Abundance of Katherines, were purchased in 2007 by East of Doheny Productions. The film rights to his other novel, Will Grayson, have not been acquired, but Green recently signed a first-look deal with Fox 2000.

Why Is Bass Fishing Popular?

An attorney with Gentle Turner Sexton & Harbison, LLC, in Birmingham, Alabama, Edgar “Ed” Gentle has practiced law for decades. In his free time, Ed Gentle is an avid bass fisherman who enjoys participating in tournaments each year.

A hobby for millions, bass fishing requires proper technique and form to truly maximize success and enjoyment. The sport’s popularity has even led to an increase in organized competitions over the years.

An abundant fish in North America, bass can grow to up to 20 pounds. While many might consider fishing a somewhat relaxing pastime, with most of it simply waiting and wondering, bass are aggressive fish by nature. Anglers throw a lure into the water and move it around as much as possible to gain bass’ attention. Once the bass takes the bait, the angler has to put in real effort to retrieve it. For many, the enjoyment of bass fishing lies in the challenge and enjoyment of competing with friends.

Lakes and ponds are great places to search for bass. Because a boat isn't always necessary, bass fishing is highly accessible for many types of people. Lures and bait are also affordable, with some companies even shipping monthly subscription boxes of these items directly to homes. Spring is the best time to fish for bass, as the fish are easily found in shallow waters, guarding their eggs.

Harper Lee - Alabama Native and Novelist

Attorney Edgar Gentle serves as a partner with his firm, Gentle Turner Sexton & Harbison, LLC, in Birmingham, Alabama. In this position, he works with courts regarding matters such as settlement administration. Furthermore, he serves the Alabama Democratic Party as treasurer. An avid reader, Edgar Gentle recently enjoyed the novel Go Set a Watchman, the newest release from acclaimed writer Harper Lee

Born in Monroeville, Alabama, in 1926, Lee rose to literary prominence primarily on the reputation of what was for years her only published book, the perennial classic To Kill a Mockingbird. It would remain the only book Harper Lee published until 2015, when HarperCollins released Go Set a Watchman, written as a sequel to To Kill a Mockingbird. The recipient of the Pulitzer Prize as well as several other distinctions, Harper Lee passed away at the age of 89 in 2016.
