Grand Canyon National Park Celebrating its Centennial

One of the most renowned national parks in the United States, the Grand Canyon National Park is celebrating its centennial this year. Offensive Coordinator Chip Lindsay Not Returning to Auburn

Edgar "Ed" Gentle is an experienced Alabama-based attorney who, as a special master and settlement administrator on behalf of the courts, has administered more than $2.5 billion in settlements. Ed Gentle completed a bachelor's degree in biology at Auburn University and continues to follow the school's football team.

Auburn began the 2018 season as a legitimate College Football Playoff contender, but the team faded down the stretch to finish the regular season with a win-loss record of 7-5 while barely qualifying for a bowl game. As a result of the team's poor offensive play in the latter half of the season, offensive coordinator Chip Lindsay won't return for the 2019 season. Lindsay, who had one year left on his three-year contract, was fired by the Tigers on December 3. 

Under Lindsay's guidance, the Tigers' offense was the worst it had been since the start of the 2009 season. It ranked 11th in the SEC in total yards per game with 373.6 and 10th in scoring offense with 28.3 points per game. Even worse, it ranked 114th in the country with only 45 plays of 20 yards or more. Lindsey is reportedly in discussion to serve as offensive coordinator with Kansas, while potential candidates to fill his role with Auburn include Eliah Drinkwitz, Hugh Freeze, Bobby Bentley, and Mike Yurcich.

Auburn Scores Season-Opening Win over Washington

Prior to earning his juris doctor degree from the University of Alabama, Ed Gentle completed a bachelor's degree in biology at Auburn University. He maintains ties to Auburn through his support of its football team.

The 2018 college football season kicked off on September 1, and the ninth-ranked Auburn Tigers did its part to improve its national ranking with an impressive 21-16 win over the sixth-ranked Washington Huskies. It was the only meeting between a pair of top-10 ranked teams in the opening week. Quarterback Jarrett Stidham completed 26 of 36 pass attempts for 273 yards and one touchdown and six receivers registered at least 30 yards, while Kam Martin led all running backs with 80 rushing yards. However, JaTarvious Whitlow scored the team's lone rushing touchdown.

While the offense was impressive, the Auburn defense played an integral role in the win. The Tigers held the Huskies to only 398 total yards and 3.1 yards per rush attempt. The team's defense registered five sacks, one of which came on the second-to-last play of the game when defensive lineman Big Kat Bryant took down Washington quarterback Jake Browning.

John Green Announces First Novel in Five Years

The recipient of a master’s degree in natural resource management from the University of Miami, Edgar "Ed" Gentle earned his law degree from the University of Alabama and has accumulated more than 35 years of legal experience. When he isn't working, Ed Gentle enjoys reading novels by his favorite author, John Green. 

A 40-year-old Indianapolis native, John Green has authored novels such as Paper Towns and The Fault in Our Stars, both of which have been adapted into films. In August of 2017, the critically acclaimed author announced that his new book, Turtles All the Way Down, would be released October 10. 

Since the publication of The Fault in Our Stars, Green has been busy promoting film versions of his novels, making YouTube videos for fans, and recording podcasts with his brother. Green spent the past two years writing his new novel in secret before he revealed the news of its release at VidCon. Turtles All the Way Down focuses on a 16-year-old struggling with mental health issues as she searches for a fugitive billionaire.

Auburn Football Receives $25,000 for Charities

Edgar (Ed) Gentle began serving as the director and chairman of the board at Custom Cable Services, Inc., in 1998. Graduating as an attorney from the University of Alabama School of Law, he is also an accomplished writer, having written a collection of poems and short stories in his book titled Pond Mountain Tales. A father of three, Ed Gentle makes it a point to take time out of his busy schedule to spend time with his family and attend Auburn Tigers football games.

Former Auburn football kicker Al Del Greco and the school’s current head coach, Gus Malzahn, donated their time to play in the Chic-fil-A Peach Bowl Challenge celebrity golf tournament. On May 2, 2017, Del Greco and Malzahn teamed up to earn $25,000 for the charitable organization A Level Up, Inc., and toward the school’s endowed scholarship program.

Featuring current collegiate head coaches partnering with celebrity alumni or former athletes from the school, the Chic-fil-A Peach Bowl Challenge began in 2007 and is one of the nation’s most highly anticipated charity golf events. This year’s Chic-fil-A Peach Bowl Challenge donated $630,000 to 15 colleges or universities and $170,000 to other charitable groups.

Since its inception, the Chic-fil-A Peach Bowl has been known as the most charitable collegiate football bowl game, as it has donated $6.8 million toward scholarships and other deserving causes.

LSU Football Players Honored for Achievements on and off the Field

Appointed as a special master and settlement administrator, Edgar Gentle serves as managing partner of Gentle, Turner, Sexton & Harbison, PLLC, in Hoover, Alabama. When he is not in the office, Edgar Gentle is an avid college football fan who follows the Louisiana State University (LSU) Tigers.

Every month, Cox Communications Academic Center for Student Athletes recognizes six student-athletes for their contributions made within the community and efforts toward the classroom. 

In March 2017, two of the six winners were from the LSU Tigers’ football program. Majoring in sports administration, both freshmen JaCoby Stevens and Cameron Lewis were honored for their ability, dedication, and academic improvement. 

Stevens was recruited as the nation’s top safety out of the 2017 class and the second overall top prospect out of Tennessee. Standing 6 feet, 2 inches tall and weighing in at 214 pounds, the five-star player was an Under Armour high school all-American participant.

A double-threat in high school playing both defensive back and quarterback, Lewis was a four-star prospect, ranked as the 17th-best player out of Louisiana in 2016. The 6-foot-2-inch, 196-pound redshirt freshman was voted twice to the 4A All-District team while at Wossman High School.

Harper Lee - Alabama Native and Novelist

Attorney Edgar Gentle serves as a partner with his firm, Gentle Turner Sexton & Harbison, LLC, in Birmingham, Alabama. In this position, he works with courts regarding matters such as settlement administration. Furthermore, he serves the Alabama Democratic Party as treasurer. An avid reader, Edgar Gentle recently enjoyed the novel Go Set a Watchman, the newest release from acclaimed writer Harper Lee. 

Born in Monroeville, Alabama, in 1926, Lee rose to literary prominence primarily on the reputation of what was for years her only published book, the perennial classic To Kill a Mockingbird. Published in 1960, To Kill a Mockingbird was quickly heralded as a finely tuned piece of literary fiction adroitly dealing with issues of class, race, and growing up in the American South. It would remain the only book Harper Lee published until 2015, when HarperCollins released Go Set a Watchman, written as a sequel to To Kill a Mockingbird. The recipient of the Pulitzer Prize as well as several other distinctions, Harper Lee passed away at the age of 89 in 2016.

The Academy of Court Appointed Masters Handbook

A practicing attorney, Ed Gentle spends the majority of his professional time as a special master and claims administrator. A special master is a legal expert appointed by a court to follow through on a specific action. Ed Gentle serves as a special master in mass tort litigation and, as such, belongs to the professional organization the Academy of Court Appointed Masters (ACAM).

Founded in 2004, ACAM exists to provide judges, lawyers, and other concerned parties with information about the role of special masters while promoting the effective use of special masters in both state and federal courts. One way it does this through the publication of a benchbook, or handbook, meant to serve as a resource for judges and lawyers regarding the appointment of special masters.

The handbook is free and can be downloaded from the ACAM website. The ACAM recommends printing it out, three-hole punching it, and putting it into a binder. Divided into six sections, the book explains the role of special masters in helping resolve disputes legally and ethically in a speedy and inexpensive manner.
